April 19-23 is Tornado Awareness Week

Here are tips on what to do if you are ever in a real tornado situation.

IF YOU ARE AT HOME

* Go at once to a windowless, interior room, a basement, or the lowest level of the building.

* If there is no basement, go to an inner hallway or smaller inner room without windows, such as a

   bathroom or closet.

* Stay away from all windows.

* Get under a piece of sturdy furniture such as a workbench, heavy table, or desk and hold on to it.

* Use arms to protect head and neck.

* If in a mobile home, find alternative shelter nearby.

IF YOU ARE OUTDOORS

* If possible, get inside the nearest sturdy building.

* If no shelter is available, lie in a ditch or low lying area or crouch near a strong building.  In low

   lying areas be aware of the potential for flooding.

* Use arms to protect head and neck.

IF IN A CAR

* Never try to outrun a tornado.  Tornadoes move very fast and change direction quickly.  They can

   easily lift and throw any car or truck.

* If near a shelter, get out of the car and head for cover.

* If no shelter is nearby, get out of the car and take shelter in a ditch or low lying area.
